Barn repair

Mare Barn wall repairs

Update from Ian Russel

I am sure those of you who walked the footpath past the 17th Century Mare Barn last autumn would have noticed the gap in the roof and the scaffolding holding up the west end of the oak frame. Our plan to rebuild deteriorated stonework eventually started in September. At time of writing the metal roof is back together and only finishing touches remain to be done.

Because Mare Barn is a historic building, it was important to ensure the repair was sympathetically carried out. We consulted the experts at the Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton and they recommended suitably skilled stonemasons.

Part of the existing stonework was cracked and leaning due to subsidence, it was necessary to take it down and make a deeper concrete foundation. The style of rebuilding has closely recreated the appearance of the old wall. The ventilation slots are positioned as before and each end has been carefully bonded in to the existing stonework. Congratulations are due to Mark Middleton and his team of masons.

Now this part of the building is secured for future generations. Further improvements will be planned to take place in future years. Watch this space!
