Update from Mikaela Bancroft and Mike McCart

Twentynine highly energetic Cubs from Camelsdale spent an hour on Marley Heath making a bug hotel in early June.

We started with a quiz to see how many of the cubs knew which bugs and animals would take up residence.

They then set about collecting trunks, branches and twigs to construct the hotel.
Once all the wood was collected and stacked the Cubs set about pulling bracken to make a roof.

The Cubs ended their evening by discussing what they should call the Hotel. Two names made the short list: The Bracken Hotel and the Wildlife Palace. We await their final decision so they can make a sign to place beside the entrance.

How to build a bug hotel at home

As we are a conservation area we only used materials onsite to build our hotel, but for those at home, you can recycle and reuse materials to make your own. See the following links for inspiration:

More volunteering events
Mark Allery would welcome volunteers to help with the mowing of the main path and clearing out around the trees. The aim is to have mown and mulched around all of the trees by the time the apple season begins - generally late July with the Katy variety.
