Volunteer Leaders

​A leaders role is to make volunteering an educational, fun, and safe experience.


Register your interest

There is a whole team available to guide you in leading events and you can also join up with a friend or family to lead together.

​All Volunteer Leaders will be able to join the SDNP Volunteer Training programme which will enable Volunteer Leaders to lead SDNP sourced volunteers as well as our own volunteers.

Guidance and role information

You would be responsible for:

Before the Day Checklist
Visit the Site, review and sign-off a site work risk assessment form for each event before work starts

Review tool safety precautions for the work, safe distances and how best to match fitness to the tasks

Review the fire risk and the procedure that should be followed if there is an incident

Liaise with Mikaela to promote your upcoming dates and closer to the day send reminders

Review the Bonfire protocol (winter only )

Organise refreshments for the day. No alcohol.

Collect one or more of the Volunteer Boxes from Mare Barn. Each box’s contents should be sufficient for 10 volunteers. Check the inventory attached to the lid for the following contents:

  • First Aid Box and check contents up-to-date and properly supplied
  • Yellow Way finding markers
  • Notebook and pen for recording names of volunteers
  • Two notice Boards (one for the entrance and the others for the work site)
  • Postcards
  • Tea break supplies – a few flasks, mugs, tea bags, instant coffee. You just need to add milk and something sweat on the day. 
On the Day Checklist
  • Position the TLS Volunteer Notice sign at the entrance to the work site and place the yellow way markers from the entrance to the work site.
  • Volunteer Briefing Prior to Work starting: Short history of the site and the land management objectives, explaining how the days task will contribute to our objectives.
  • The Safety briefing on the use of hand tools and safe working distances.
  • Record the names of volunteers with email contact details for those who are new to us.
  • Photograph the site before and after the work to show the impact of volunteering. 
  • Place a Notice on the site during the work explaining to passers-by what we are doing and how they can join the volunteers.
  • Have a pack of postcards available.
  • Seek out opportunities of ‘volunteer stories’ for the website and newsletter.

The Day After Checklist
Place the signed and dated Risk Assessment form in the Volunteer Box
Return the Volunteer Box(s) and Notice Boards to Mare Barn.
Send the digital team:
  • A list of names for those who volunteered so they can be recorded on the membership / volunteer database.
  • Photographs and/or Vox Pops for social media, our website and local press.
